Cal Club Autocross Returns to El Toro For Fourth Event of 2018

Irvine, CA—Cal Club Autocross returned to the runways of the former El Toro Marine Base in Irvine for its fourth event of the 2018 season on Sunday, April 15. With a smaller-than-normal turnout due to the conflicting national event in Northern California, 100 competitors took to the Pete Loney designed course.

California Street Touring was the largest class of the event with nine drivers, and for the second event in a row, Michael Bradley claimed the top spot with a .270 win over Jonathan Hartendorp. Another close win came in Street Touring eXtreme as Derek Punch laid down a clean third run to best Adam Tarnoff by three-tenths.

In Street Touring Roadster, Pete Loney’s second run was enough to put him on top of Robert Joe by .295. Leonard Cachola needed to go faster on his fourth run to secure the win in E Street, staving off Tyler Neff by only two-tenths.

In the PAX class, Tom Berry led from the gate before ultimately claiming a 1.6-second win, while daughter Lisa Berry stood on her first run in the Evo to win PAX Ladies by almost nine-tenths. Randy Gonzalez was another driver who led from start to finish, winning A Street by 1.6-seconds.

Omar Kaayal drove away with H Street earning a five-second lead, while Brian Strovers defeated wife Cathy by two seconds in Super Stock R. Historic 1 was won by Brian Howlett for the fourth time this season, while Elvin Hom took home the trophy in Street Touring Sport by 1.9-seconds.

Mark DeShon only got one clean run, but that was all he needed to secure the Street Touring Ultra victory, besting Alex Valencia by 1.1-seconds. Stanley Kowalski drove faster on each of his subsequent runs to win Street Mod Combined by over a second against Julian Manolov, while Matt Davis was a close third only .034 behind.

Bolong Guan won the Novice class, which indexes novices together throughout the day, while Laura Cordodimas finished second.

Cal Club Autocross heads back to El Toro for its fifth event of the 2018 season on Sunday, May 6.
